Volkan Akkoç

Volkan Akkoç (born January 1984) is a conductor and composer. He is the Choral Director of Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, also conducting Cemal Resit Rey Symphonic Choir.

After his graduation from Department of Piano from Istanbul University State Conservatory (IUDK) in 2007, he earned BA in History in MSGSU, MA in Music Theory from ITU center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM), MA and PhD in Composition and Conducting from (IUDK).

He attended Master Classes of prominent choral conductor such as Volker Hempfling, Denes Szabo, Frieder Bernius, Georg Grün and Ragnar Rasmussen.

Akkoç is the Founder and Choral Director of ‘Sirene’ female Choir since 2014. Sirene received many awards including ‘Outstanding Performance of Contemporary Choral Music’ performing his composition ‘Bedava’ in 10th International Johannes Brahms Competition in which he was also awarded ‘Conductor Prize’in 2017, and “Audience Prize” in the Baltic Sea Choir Competition in 2019.

Sirene gave 3 concerts and was one of the pilot choirs of conducting a masterclass led by Norwegian conductor Ragnar Rasmussen in WSCM 2023 held in İstanbul in which Akkoç gave a seminar on History of Turkish Choral Music.

He was awarded the ‘First Prize’ in Polyphonic Choral works Composition Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture in 2018. He won the ‘Third Prize’ in the same competition in 2019. He has received composition commissions all over the world. His piece “Lichvers” was performed under the baton of prominent conductor Gary Graden as one of the festival pieces in Musica Sacra 2024 held in Marktoberdorf, Germany.

He taught choral music, classical harmony, music theory, jazz theory and harmony in İstanbul University State Conservatory and Mimar Sinan University İstanbul State Conservatory between 2012-2023.He is Chorus Master of İstanbul State Opera House since 2019.

His opera repertoire consist of Fidelio (L.v. Beethoven), Don Giovanni (W. A. Mozart), Entführung Aus Dem Serail (W. A. Mozart), L’elisir d’amore (G. Donizetti), Madame Butterfly (G. Puccini), Sinan (H. Uçarsu), Der Fliegende Holländer (R. Wagner), La Fille du Régiment, Deli Dolu (C. R. Rey) as well as Messa da Requiem (G. Verdi), Requiem (W.A. Mozart), Requiem (G. Faure), 9th Symphony ve Choral Fantasy (L.v. Beethoven), Oratorio de Noël (C. Saint-Saëns), Yunus Emre Oratorio (A.A. Saygun) Atatürk Oratorio, Cumhuriyet Cantata (N. Kodallı), Uğur Mumcu Cantata, Darüşşafaka Cantata, Türkiye Rapsodik Cantata (T. Erdener).

Currently he is the musical director of Musical Theater ‘Amedeus”.

Akkoç, who was invited as a jury to many international choral competitions, was invited to the World Choir Games held in July 2021 as a jury from Turkey, and is invited to the European Choir Games to be held in Sweden in 2023.
